Answering The Challenge
The National Academy of Engineering has issued the “Grand Challenges for Engineering” which includes restoration and maintenance of urban infrastructure. CEE Professors Sara Wadia-Fascetti and Ming Wang are leading the VOTERS (Versatile Onboard Traffic mbedded Roaming Sensors) project, which will develop onboard multi-sensor technology that will detect structural flaws in roads and bridges.

Making Our Drinking Water Safe
April Gu, Assistant Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering, is exploring ways to make removing polluntants from wastewater more efficient and cost effective. Her research is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Water and Environmental Research Foundation (WERF).

Professor Yegian Protects Artwork
Prof. Mishac Yegian of Northeastern University in collaboration with Museum of Fine Arts, Boston has conducted research on evaluation of a mechanical isolator to protect four MFA sculptures against earthquakes in Nagoya Japan, where they will be displayed for four years.

Civil Faculty Win $9 Million NIST Grant to Study Infrastructure Conditions
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced nine awards for new research projects to develop advanced sensing technologies that would enable timely and detailed monitoring and inspection of the structural health of bridges, roadways and water systems that comprise a significant component of the nation's public infrastructure.

Trying to Keep the World Structurally Sound
Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor Ming Wang has received funding from NSF, FHWA, and NIST to develop sensors for bridges and roadways to keep them safe. Wang is internationally recognized as in expert in monitoring the structural health of bridges, tunnels, and other infrastructure.

Dialogue of Civilizations Project might lead to Bicycle Lane
After 6 students attended a month-long engineering class in the Netherlands on sustainable transportation, they have designed a method to add a bicycle promenade to the carriage path on Commonwealth Avenue. They gave a presentation to Newton residents during a recent City Hall meeting explaining their proposal.

Gu Wins 2 Grants to Study Wastewater Treatment Processes
April Gu, Assistant Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering, has received a $297K NSF grant and a $230K grant from the Water and Environmental Research Foundation (WERF) to study the impact of wastewater derived organic nitrogen and refractory organic phosphorus.
