Gu Wins 2 Grants to Study Wastewater Treatment Processes
April Gu, Assistant Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering, has received a $297K NSF grant and a $230K grant from the Water and Environmental Research Foundation (WERF) to study the impact of wastewater derived organic nitrogen and refractory organic phosphorus.
Professor Gu received her BS from TsingHua University in Sanitary and Environ. Engineering. She received both her MS and PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Northeastern University (1997) and the University of Washington (2003), respectively. Her expertise includes application of biotechnology for water quality improvement, biological treatment processes and bioremediation, ecotoxicology and toxicity assessment, and biosensors for water quality monitoring.
The Water Environment Research Foundation, formed in 1989, is America’s leading independent scientific research organization dedicated to wastewater and stormwater issues. Throughout the last 25 years, they have developed a portfolio of more than $130 million in water quality research.
WERF is a nonprofit organization that operates with funding from subscribers and the federal government. Their subscribers include wastewater treatment plants, stormwater utilities, and regulatory agencies. Industry, equipment companies, engineers and environmental consultants also lend their support and expertise as subscribers.
