The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Welcomes Four New Members to its Industrial Advisory Board

Michael Walsh, PE, Kaitlin McCarthy (BSCE ‘09), Mark Warren (BSME ‘85), and Matthew J. Kennedy, PE, were appointed the newest members of the distinguished CEE Industrial Advisory Board (IAB). The IAB advises the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering on matters related to curriculum development, research, student organizations and cooperative education, and is an important voice in guiding the department’s efforts in preparing students for current and future industry needs.

Michael Walsh, PE, Senior Vice President of CDM Smith 

Michael Walsh is a Northeastern University alum who received his M.S. in Environmental Engineering. He also holds a BS in Civil Engineering from Merrimack College. Walsh holds professional accreditations as a Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in multiple states and a Chartered Engineer (CEng.) in the United Kingdom. Additionally, he is a Board-Certified Environmental Engineer recognized by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and an Envision Sustainability Professional (ENV SP) designated by the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure. His expertise lies in planning, designing, and delivering sustainable and resilient infrastructure, with a focus on projects related to drinking water, water reuse, and clean energy.

Kaitlin McCarthy (BSCE ‘09), Founder and CEO of Ionic Development Company 

Kaitlin McCarthy is a Northeastern alum, receiving her BS in Civil Engineering in 2009. She is the CEO of Ionic Development Company, a Boston-based real estate company founded in 2022. With over a decade managing downtown Boston projects, she previously served as VP at The HYM Investment Group and worked with The Boston Consulting Group. Earlier, at Turner Construction Company, McCarthy led the financial reporting department and managed budgets for major projects, including the Liberty Mutual Headquarters in Back Bay. Engaged in various real estate associations like WDC, PWC, ULI, NAIOP, and the Northeastern Galante INC Board, she also advises on engineering-business programs.

Mark Warren (BSME ‘85), PE, Senior Vice President at WSP 

Mark Warren is also a Northeastern alumni who graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1985. He is Senior Vice President at WSP, where he leads the New England District, providing oversight for the Energy, Water, Transportation, and Property and Buildings business lines. Mark has taken charge of WSP’s Green Team and sustainable design practices, along with leading a technical team devoted to analyzing net-zero carbon initiatives. He is recognized as an accredited professional within the United States Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System and holds certification as a Certified Commissioning Provider (CCP).

Matthew J. Kennedy, PE, Senior Vice President of VHB 

Matthew Kennedy holds a BS in Civil Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He is also a Registered Professional Engineer (PE). From 1997 to 2011, he worked as Vice President and Water Resources Engineer with AECOM. As well as being Sr. VP, Kennedy is the Director of Technical Services at VHB. His love of hydrology brought him to the civil engineering industry. Kennedy works with VHB to drive the overall strategic direction and operations of the firm. He is dedicated to focusing on the future so VHB can make more sustainable environments for coming generations.
