Hajjar Named University Distinguished Professor at 14th Annual Honors Convocation

To wrap the Spring 2024 semester, Northeastern University held its 14th annual Honors Convocation, recognizing the outstanding scholarship of the institution’s faculty and students. Presided over by President Joseph Aoun, the event was especially notable for coinciding with the 125th anniversary of the university. Among those recognized were several from the civil and environmental engineering community, including Department Chair and CDM Smith Professor Jerry Hajjar, who was named a University Distinguished Professor, the university’s highest faculty honor. University Distinguished Professor candidates are selected by committee, which identifies faculty members with the most eminent international recognition in their fields for research, scholarship, impact, leadership, and service. The decision for the appointment rests with the president and provost.

An internationally recognized expert and leader in the design and behavior of sustainable and resilient steel and composite steel/concrete structures, Hajjar is the President of the American Society of Civil Engineers’s (ASCE) Structural Engineering Institute, whose national structures conference, SEICon24, he chaired this past March. As SEI President, he has been helping to lead the profession towards a sharper focus on sustainability, resilience, and equity.  Hajjar is also a member of the Committee on Specifications of the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), and he leads several AISC committees.

Hajjar, who joined Northeastern in 2010, was also recently awarded the 2023 Thomas A. Lenox ExCEED Leadership Award for Contributions to Civil Engineering Education from ASCE, the 2024 Lynn S. Beedle Award for lifetime achievement from the Structural Stability Research Council, the 2024 Special Achievement Award from the American Institute of Steel Construction, and membership in the National Academy of Engineering in 2022.
