Edward G. Galante retired from ExxonMobil in 2006 as senior vice president and member of the Management Committee after a 34-year career at that firm. His responsibilities included worldwide Refining and Supply, Fuels and Lubricants Marketing and Research and Engineering. His earlier experience at ExxonMobil included progressively responsible assignments in engineering, sales, product line coordination and terminal operations. He also held positions in Corporate Planning, Supply, and served as manager of the company’s Baton Rouge, Louisiana, refinery and as managing director of Esso Thailand. Currently he serves on the board of Praxair, Inc. and of Junior Achievement Worldwide. He is a member of the 25-Year Club of the Petroleum Industry. He also serves as executive in residence at the university’s College of Business Administration. In 2007, Mr. Galante pledged $5 million to establish the Galante Engineering and MBA Program, an interdisciplinary effort to hone top students’ problem-solving and decision-making skills through a combined BS/MBA program.

Civil engineering alumna Annahid Dastgheib-Beheshti, E’15, was named one of the ASCE 2022 New Faces in Civil Engineering. Dastgheib-Beheshti is the current President of the Northeastern University Civil Engineering Alumni Organization and is a Senior Civil Engineer at Arup in Boston.

Christine Keville E’90, Founder, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Keville Enterprises, Chair of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Industrial Advisory Board, and an MS graduate from the department, has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). She was inducted for promoting diversity in the engineering profession through business success, mentoring students and businesses, and leadership of national professional societies.

Alumna Christine Keville, MS’90, was appointed Chancellor of the Construction Management Association of America College of Fellows, a prestigious honor. Christine, President and CEO of Keville Enterprises, serves as the Chair of the CEE Industrial Advisory Board, and is a well-known leader in the engineering and construction industry.

Congratulations to John Kennedy, Northeastern Alumnus and Senior Principal and co-founder of VHB, who was recently elected as the 2014 International Vice President of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE). Mr. Kennedy has over 40 years of active professional experience as a traffic engineer, 38 years of active membership in ITE, including elected leadership positions at the Chapter, Section, District and International levels, and currently serves on the Industrial Advisory Board for the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Next year Mr. Kennedy will advance to President of ITE and continue to work towards his vision for the institute to be the internationally recognized source for transportation knowledge, practice and publications for practicing engineers and planners.

Congratulations to Northeastern University alumnus and Civil and Environmental Engineering part-time faculty member David Bedoya, who won the 2013 Clemens Herschel Award from the Boston Society of Civil Engineers Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers. The award recognizes an individual for publishing papers that are useful, commendable, and worthy of acknowledgment. Dr. Bedoya has published numerous papers on his projects on hydraulic/hydrologic modeling in Cambridge, Somerville and Waltham, Massachusetts and has also led field programs in Cambridge correlating wet flow in storm drains with particulate phosphorous movement. Dr. Bedoya received his BS and MS degrees in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Lleida in Spain, and his PhD degree from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Northeastern University in 2009.

In August 2011, Northeastern Alumnus Frank DePaola was named Highway Administrator for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT). Frank has previously served as the Assistant General Manager for Design and Construction at the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA); with Harvard University as part of the Allston Development Group; as Director of Construction for the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority; and most recently as the MassDOT Acting Highway Administrator. He has been a professional engineer for more than 30 years in the design and construction industry. Frank is a licensed, registered Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. He received his Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Northeastern University in 1984 and his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth.

The Edmund Friedman Young Engineer Award for Professional Achievement is made to younger members of ASCE who are judged to have attained significant professional achievements by the degree to which they have served the profession and contributed to public service outside their professional careers. Deborah Snyder is currently a Technical Operations Manager and Project Manager with CDM Federal Programs Corporation. Her projects include providing assessment services to the EPA for multiple sites; developing over 350 work plan addenda for the Department of Transportation for the removal of asbestos in Libby, MT; and the civil site design of a system upgrade for Denver’s Metro Wastewater Reclamation District. Deborah has received multiple awards and has been featured in Workforce Diversity, a magazine for women and minority professionals. One of her greatest contributions to Civil Engineering was her involvement with the ASCE Task Committee that planned the 2006 Summit on the Future of Civil Engineering. Deborah continues to be involved in ASCE with her recent appointment to the ASCE Strategic Planning Committee.

Congratulations to alumnus Sam Sleiman, E’83, MS’85, who was inducted as Chairman of the National Board of Directors for the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA). Mr. Sleiman, the Director of Capital Programs and Environmental Affairs at Massachusetts Port Authority, has over 25 years of experience in the design and construction industry. Professor Ali Touran will join Mr. Sleiman on the CMAA National Board of Directors.

ENR editors select young professionals who have “advanced into leadership roles at design and construction firms, and are making an impact in [New England].” Congratulations to Eduardo Gamez, Deputy Director of Risk Management at AECOM, who was named as one of Engineering News-Record’s (ENR) Top 10 Young Professionals under the age of 40. Gamez, age 37, has built a reputation as an expert in risk-management assessment and techniques through his contributions on several multi-billion dollar, global projects. Indrani Ghosh, Team Leader of the Sustainability Group at Kleinfelder, was also among the Top 10 Young Professionals. Ghosh, age 35, has established herself as a leader in reframing the engineering design process to include climate change impacts. She successfully applies her knowledge of climate change to geospatial analysis and adaptation strategies for water infrastructure projects. Both Gamez and Ghosh received their graduate degrees from Northeastern University. Congratulations again to both of them!

Congratulations to alumnus John Struzziery, E’76, MS’81, senior program manager at Kleinfelder, was named one of Engineering News-Record’s (ENR) Top 25 Newsmakers of 2014. ENR editors select Newsmakers for their “outstanding accomplishments, for exceeding expectations, for injecting an original idea or new approach that would take the place of traditional practices, or for performing some special service that benefits the industry and the public.”

Stephen Hannabury, E’78, has been named the 2017 Distinguished Business Officer of the Year by the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO). The national award is given to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution over the course of their career to the field of business and financial management in higher education. Hannabury’s nomination was based on the formative role he played in founding Olin, his personal mentorship of numerous staff at Olin and elsewhere, and his leadership in creating innovative business practices for the entire industry through The Boston Consortium for Higher Education and Educators Health (“edHEALTH”).

Jerry Reed is the Director of Engineering for the San Diego Water Authority. His recent project “Emergency & Carryover Storage Project” won the prestigious 2017 ASCE Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement (OCEA) Award. The OCEA award honors the project that best illustrates superior civil engineering skills and represents a significant contribution to civil engineering progress and society. Honoring an overall project rather than an individual, the award celebrates the contributions of many engineers. Gary Bousquet, E’91, helped Jerry manage this project/program since 1998. Gary is a Senior Engineering Manager at the Water Authority and oversees Design and Construction teams.

CEE Industrial Advisory Board Member Craig Barnes has been awarded the 2015 NCSEA Service Award from the National Council on Structural Engineering Associations. Craig helped established NCSEA in 1993, was President of NCSEA from 1995-1996, and received the NCSEA Robert Cornforth Award in 2015. Craig is also Past President of both the Boston Association of Structural Engineers and the Structural Engineers Association of Massachusetts. He has chaired NCSEA’s Basic Education Committee for years, and Craig and I frequently have discussions about the civil engineering curriculum at Northeastern and nationally. Craig founded and continues to lead CBI Consulting Inc. and is licensed in 20 states. Please join me in congratulating Craig for this wonderful recognition of his outstanding service to our profession.

Congratulations to alumnus Sam Sleiman, the director of Capital Programs and Environmental Affairs for the Massachusetts Port Authority, who was recently selected as the 2018 Person of the Year by the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA). He was recognized by the CMAA for his “dedication to the construction industry, best-in-class service, and implementation of AEC best practices”. “Sam is making a difference in our industry, and we salute him for his approach to innovation, mentoring, and leadership,” said CMAA President and CEO Andrea S. Rutledge, CAE. In 2018, he delivered the Spring Commencement keynote address at Wentworth Institute of Technology, where he was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Engineering.

This award was provided “for his long-time commitment to EERI, starting with his leadership role within the EERI Student Leadership Council … and his collaboration in earthquake reconnaissance through VERT and LFE”. Jampole is an Associate at Exponent in New York City, where he investigates design deficiencies and damage from earthquakes, hurricanes, settlement, adjacent construction, and structure collapse for litigation and arbitration. Ezra holds a PhD and MSc from Stanford University.

The award is for his outstanding contribution to the advancement of the Institute for Transportation Engineers (ITE) over a period of years. Kennedy, VHB Co-Founder and Senior Principal at Vanasse Hangen Brustlin (VHB) in Massachusetts, has focused his 45-year career on traffic operations on large-scale projects, including the award-winning Central Artery/Tunnel (Big Dig) in Boston, MA—one of the nation’s largest and most complex transportation and civil works projects. Kennedy also played an integral role in Massachusetts’ first design-build project and provided traffic management strategies for MassDOT’s Fast14 accelerated bridge project. Kennedy has served at all levels of leadership at the ITE Chapter, New England Section, and the Northeastern District levels as well as on the International Board of Direction, including serving as IT President in 2015. Kennedy has served on the department’s Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) and was the IAB Chair from 2011-2013.
