CEE Faculty Beighley, Fannon, Fernandez, and Ormsby Receive Promotions

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is pleased to announce our recent faculty promotions. These promotions are milestones in their career, and reflect the department’s commitment to a broadly interdisciplinary, experiential education model focused on student success. All promotions are effective starting the 2020-2021 academic year.

Faculty Promotions

Edward Beighley is promoted to full Professor. Additionally, he will continue to serve as the department’s Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies. Professor Beighley’s research is focused on the integration of modeling and remote sensing in water resources applications. He is an applications scientist for NASA’s Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite mission and a science team member for NASA’s Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment Follow-On (GRACE-FO) mission. For both missions, he maps the world’s surface water systems. He is an affiliated faculty with the College of Science’s Department of Marine and Environmental Sciences and Northeastern’s Global Resilience Institute.

David Fannon is promoted to Associate Professor with tenure. Professor Fannon enjoys a joint appointment with the College of Arts, Media and Design’s School of Architecture. His expertise focuses on high-performance building design and human comfort within the built environment. He serves as the graduate advisor and program director for the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering’s Master of Science in Sustainable Building Systems program. Professor Fannon has played a crucial role in the program’s development and implementation. He is the winner of the 2019 CAMD Excellence in Teaching Award.

Loretta Fernandez is promoted to Associate Professor with tenure. Professor Fernandez is an expert in organic contaminants in the environment and passive sampling methods. She is jointly appointed with the Department of Marine and Environmental Sciences. Her recent research into the effectiveness of homemade COVID-19 masks made international headlines. Professor Fernandez is the recipient of the Department’s 2019 Excellence in Teaching Award. She is the faculty advisor for the Chi Epsilon Honors Society Northeastern student chapter.

Jessica Ormsby is promoted to Associate Co-op Coordinator. She works directly with the students on professional development, and helps assist them through the co-op process. Her work has been integral to the expansion of the department’s co-op program to MS students, new companies, and for new disciplines. She is the faculty advisor for the Engineers Without Borders Northeastern student chapter, which won the 2019 Premier Chapter Award. She received the 2018 CEE Excellence in Teaching Award.
