About STReSSThe Laboratory for Structural Testing of Resilient and Sustainable Systems (STReSS Laboratory) at Northeastern University is a 4,000 square-foot research facility in Burlington, Mass., in the heart of the I-95 Technology Corridor. The STReSS Lab is housed within Northeastern's George J. Kostas Research Institute for Homeland Security, a 70,000 square-foot facility for research and development, with portions of the Institute outfitted for secure research in accordance with U.S. Department of Defense standards. The Kostas Institute opened in September 2011. The double-height STReSS Lab features a 2,000 square-foot, reinforced concrete strong floor to enable full-scale testing of buildings, bridges, and other structures to failure. The strong floor includes a grid of 416 tie-down anchors, each capable of withstanding 200,000 pounds of force. The STReSS Lab also includes a loading dock, staging area, machine shop, and control room, and a 20-ton-capacity crane to enable construction and transfer of test specimens up to 18 feet tall. The STReSS Lab is available for multi-scale and coupled experimental, computational, and field investigations across several disciplines of civil engineering, mechanical engineering, engineering mechanics, biomechanics, materials science, architecture, and related fields. Partnership with industry is a core goal of the laboratory. Contract testing services are available as well as opportunities to partner on research.
